Tableaus

This is a great lesson to do with students when you are working with the tableau strategy. In this Youtube video the teacher takes the students through a very simple yet effective lesson on tableaus. I liked this video and lesson in particular because she starts off with a fun warm-up. Then has students review what a tableau is by giving them a quick scenario and them creating their tableau on the spot. After a few example such as these she moves on to the activity. The students are divided into groups and have a few minutes to create a tableau of the section of the poem assigned to them.

Once the students have had their time to prepare they are asked to perform. I like how she had them stay in the spots they were practicing. Like we discussed in our class, this is beneficial for the students to perform where they have been working. I also liked her use of the sticks as a form of management, where the speed of the sticks told the students what they were to be doing (getting in position and freezing for the tableau).

Finally, she concludes her lesson by having the students discuss what their tableau was and how it represented their section of the poem.

Overall, a great lesson to do in your classroom that does not take up too much time or take too much prep work, yet allows students to understand and work with the tableau strategy.
