Building Cultural Awareness Through Dance

The lesson on building cultural awareness through dance found on the CODE Youtube page is one I found very interesting. The video has students exploring the global diaspora of dance. The teacher goes through many different dance forms from around the world such as hip hop, traditional bhangra, modern bhangra, traditional hindi and many more. The students get to research a dance and put together a presentation where they talk about the dance and perform a part of the dance with their groups.

It was great to watch the students research a dance from a different part of the world, interpret the movements, educate themselves with the help of technology and share their findings with the class. This is a great lesson because it allows students to use their inquiry skills to look at dance and they are able to expand their knowledge beyond just what they have been exposed to thus far. It allows for students to share a cultural dance of their own with their classmates as well, highlighting inclusivity and diversity in the classroom and of course building cultural awareness through dance.
