Giraffes Can't Dance Dance Strategies
Giraffes Can’t Dance
1. Before Reading: (Space, Body, Time)
- Explore and discuss how to present animals in dance form.
- Play different pieces of jungle music (fast/slow).
- Have students move around the room and as they do call out different jungle animals and have students move like that animal.
- When the music stops they must culminate in a statue that recreates the animal.
2. Summarize or Read Giraffes Can’t Dance
3. Create a Piece: (Canon)
- A choreographic form in which a dance phrase is performed by more than one soloist or group and begins at different times so that the phrases overlap
- Groups are each given an animal and must come up with a dance piece in canon form. (everyone performs the same movements. They start a few beats after each other)
- Play a piece of music and have them perform
