Giraffes Can't Dance Drama Strategies
Giraffes Can’t Dance
1. Before Reading: Soundscape of the jungle.
- Verbally brainstorm different sounds you hear in the jungle and how we can make those sounds using our bodies/things in the room. (animal footsteps, insects, birds, trees rustling)
- Next, break up the class into groups of 4-5 and have them create a jungle orchestra.
- Finally, have groups present their soundscapes
2. Choral Speaking
- The reading or reciting of a text by a group, experimentation with language, rhythm, volume, pace, and different numbers of voices
- Split students up into groups of 4-5 and give them an excerpt from the story to perform as a choral speaking piece.
3. Tableaux/What if
- In groups, students create a what if statement relating to the book
- Students then create a 3-4 frame tableaux demonstrating their what if statement (what would happen if their what if statement was true, before, during and after their statement situation)
- Have the class present their tableaux’s while students guess what their what if statement is
